Alicia, I don't mean to say that bfing classes and support groups are
mutually exclusive. I have always emphasized to my patients the need to get
educated, just as we educate preteens on their reproductive organs, just as
we educate pregnant women with childbirth classes, and educate women about
menopause. It is a physiological process that is natural but not
instinctual. Obviously, you know this. So, I have found over the years that
my patients that took breastfeeding classes were so much more relaxed and
self-confident that those who didn't. I don't have the experience of
relying on community groups alone prenatally for breastfeeding education. I
still, after getting all of this enlightening feedback (thanks to all!),
feel it is important for my patients to get straight facts while their
partner is also present. But, now I will also mention the benefits to them
of going to LLL meetings while pregnant! Thanks again-Anne
