Taxonomy or morphomectrics aside, evolution is based upon  rearrangements
of genetic diversity, with most species continually a genetically and
epigenetically adapting to existing, changing, or novel niches.  The
legitimate concern for protecting local breeding populations is to not lose
the genetic combinations that natural selection has resulted in
well-adapted local variants with often unique characteristics.
