There was no mention of any "overlap" between the symptoms of what was called "CCD", and what was called classified as "varroa collapse" at the time. 
The unique symptoms of CCD were clear to the researchers involved, and to  the beekeepers who volunteered to collect samples at their own expense. 

Retrospective attempts to revise history are more difficult when so many notebooks have been kept so meticulously by so many men and women of good character.
