I found the perfect medium for bumble bees... cottonseed hulls. I buy it in 40lb paper sacks and I had one sitting under my lean-to in order to easily reach in an grab a handful for the bee smoker. One typical day last season, I reached in and pulled out a handful to find several bumbles tunneling around in the hulls. No stings thankfully, but it was neat to see. I said if I built any houses, I'd line it with cottonseed hulls.
