Hello Lactnet,

Thank you all for your replies concerning the child with feeding aversion.
The child did have a laser frenotomy early on and has been seen by many
specialists, including genetics, cardiology, GI, ENT etc. She has had Early
Intervention visits with OT and PT over most of her first year. I think on
this list we all agree that removal of breastfeeding would cause more harm
and good, but so far evidence for our opinion is lacking as to the
significant chance that this will be harmful to the child’s emotion and
nutritional intake. Since pumping and supplying breastmilk is still
recommended the important immunities and developmental benefits would be
considered as continuing. The dietician’s opinion is that feeding at the
breast deters the child from wanting to eat solid food – viewed as a
behavioral issue it seems to me. I did find a chain of studies starting
with an article by Buckley cited in Ruth Lawrence’s book. These are about
mostly concerning nutrition for healthy children with extended breastfeeding
so transferring to an ill child is an issue, but it is a place to start.
