Subject: Re: Passion

Polly, you mentioned feeling judged when people comment that you are
"passionate" about breastfeeding. Do you notice that "passion" is okay in
other circumstances, such as over something that costs money? Now, as in
the past, breastfeeding and breastmilk are considered "free" and therefore
valueless, economically. Until countries begin including breastfeeding in
their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), its value is going to remain invisible
- something "that's nice to do" and "if you can". Costed realistically,
rather than in a token way, the milk produced by women is a considerable
national resource - that is only the economic aspects. (Julie Smith has
done important work on this, which I don't have in front of me as I write.)
Lactnetters will be aware of the many intangible elements, the aspects for
which a monetary "worth" for breastfeeding and breastmilk cannot be
measured.
Passion sells products, as effective sales persons know. If we shied away
from passion about breastfeeding and offered information and support in a
flat, clinical manner, I am sure it would be a turn-off to pregnant women
and mothers, except those who are already passionate about breastfeeding
themselves. Humour, competitions, games in classes - or just the friendly
smile and you're doing great" to a Mum - we need it.
What I am saying is - Polly , take a pat on the back.
Finally, I'll share this. The other day I was as the shopping centre and a
mother practically ran by with her baby on her front and
breastfeeding while she caught up with her other kids. It was obviously an
intrinsic part of her life.
