Thalassemia is not caused by low iron, it is a variant of the hemoglobin molecule. Low iron is a separate issue. The thalassemia should not cause nutritional issues for the baby.

Lisa, go to the spin(supporting premature infant nutrition) at the website of ucsd, you'll find pdf for "nicu" graduate nutrition plan. The forms are very helpful. Let me know what you think.

He states these babies need more calcium and magnesium than is provided in breastmilk for bone mineralization. He has research to back this up that was given to him by the formula rep. Anyone else doing this in their NICU? Does anyone know any research that would support exclusively breastfeeding these babies? If these babies truly need these nutrients can they be given other ways?

Subject: Thalassemia

I looked in the archives and online, but nothing quite answers my question.

A mum with thalassemia ("Mediterranean anemia") is concerned about whether
the iron in her milk is enough for her 4 month old. She said that the
baby "gets tired quickly and has a short fuse". I gathered from the way
she said it that the child isn't limp and wan, but is impatient....
probably not "tired".

Some posts from way back when (thanks, Phyllis Adamson) suggested that
mothers with the condition can breastfeed babies well. Does anyone have
further recent information about anything we should watch out for?
Unluckily the cord was cut at once, to the mother's great distress, so the
baby didn't get the original iron stores available to her.

The articles I read are about nutrition and care for the person with the
condition, not about possible breastfeeding issues.

Thanks for any help.
