It seemed to me that breastfeeding without being swaddled in shawls and sheets was quite acceptable in that time.  There are many pictures of Madonna and Child in the breastfeeding pose in the Louvre and other major art museums and galleries.  “The Green Cushion” is my favourite.  It is thought to be painted by Charles II de Boise of Milan, but that is not certain.  It is beautiful and I use it as a model for my breastfeeding preparation classes, together with others that I have found.
