Hi all,

i am recertifying by exam this summer and between information i am finding in my studies and general information I am hearing out in the field I am wondering what the current standard of care is with regards to hot or cold compresses or a combination of the two for relieving engorgement and to help with mastitis symptoms. Historically we would recommend heat to help the milk flow and bring blood to the area (and my old books are confirming this) and cold after feeds/expression to reduce swelling and for pain relief, but now I am only seeing reference to cold compresses to reduce swelling. Has heat gone by the wayside as a recommended treatment option? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ami Burnham LM, RN, IBCLC
