Weuse this when moms have an overactive milk or abundance of milk.
The flow of the milk is either too fast or too forceful or that the quantity of milk is too much for the baby to handle at any one time. This can result in an over abundance of milk, that is that there is milk in excess of the baby’s needs or demands. The baby eats and fills up on high lactose (milk sugar) foremilk and has less intake of the high fat hindmilk.
Symptoms:
1. The baby latches onto the breast, 2-3 times, initiates the letdown and then suddenly gulps and then pulls away from the breast. The baby may gulps, choke, or sputter at the beginning of the feedings or may just simply swallow and swallow with little sucking at all.
2. The baby may squirm, or fuss during the feeding or after nursing on one side.
3. The baby eats rapidly and is done nursing in a short time.
4. May spit up - milk drools out at the end of the feeding or have larger spit up
4. Mom may sense that she has too much milk, leaking in the middle of the night, always feeling full, drips milk constantly out the breast not nursed or shooting breast pains during feedings, and feels tender, uncomfortable after nursing.
We have the mom pump/hand express 5-10 cc
Nurse for 3-5 minutes
Burp - allow the baby to calm and exprience being stomach full as well as hindmilk content
Back to the same side
Continue to single side nurse - breast is soft
Offer 2nd side - pump or hand express for comfort
Experience - it works well - less spit up - baby longer between feedings - mom happy
