The recent post about breastmilk that wouldn't freeze reminded me that I wanted to ask about idea of freezing breastmilk for premies due to concerns of CMV infection. The research I have found seems to indicate that this practice is not supported by research. Anyone have knowledge of current research, or practices at their hospital. We are revising our breastmilk storage policy, I would be in favor of using freshly expressed breastmilk because it preserves more antibodies. We use freshly expressed milk first, then refrigerated milk less than 48 hours old, if milk is more than 48 hours old, it should be frozen. We say out at room temperature for less than 4 hours if freshly expressed, but what about - how long at room temp if previously frozen or refrigerated? Any ideas?

Thank you,

Tricia Shamblin, RN, IBCLC
