this sounds like something that was carefully orchestrated to almost,
coincide with World Breastfeeding Week. How surprising (not!) that the
food industry know how to time their moves and put the right spin on
things so as to appear credible. The media ought to be ashamed for
letting themselves be used this way if they swallowed it hook, line
and sinker. If they took compensation for running adverts disguised as
news they should be more than ashamed, they should be stopped.
The industry and its lackeys here have for more than two years been
'leaking' purported news that our national guidelines for infant
nutrition are to be changed, away from recommending exclusive
breastfeeding for 6 months with exceptions on individual basis if baby
is not thriving, in favor of going back to the pre-2001 recommendation
of exclusive BF for '4-6 months'. In fact the new guidelines have yet
to be sent out to consulting bodies for comment. News media, including
our tragically tabloid-ized national website for dissemination of new
health research, spread this poorly camouflaged advertising completely
uncritically.
