Dear Lactnet Friends:

Heather posted: "Tip (which I got from watching an episode of female cop
drama Cagney and Lacey!*): if you suspect someone does not actually have a
baby,
then simply ask the birthweight of the baby, and what the baby weighs
now. Most people with a baby will not object to the questions and
will be able to answer, at least the birthweight. Anyone without a
baby will be wrong-footed and will be unable to come up with a
sensible-sounding answers."

In the October 2013 article published in Pediatrics "Microbial
Contamination of Human Milk Purchased Via the Internet", the researchers
write: " Communications were confined to carrying out the transaction and
were terminated if sellers inquired about a recipient infant or insisted on
telephone or in-person communication--"

Heather's recommendation to ask about the baby makes sense for protection.
The way the researchers in the Pediatrics study collected milk samples only
from sellers who never asked about the baby is a weakness in their study.

warmly,
