Hearing Sandra Steingraeber Phd speak in Seattle, she told of how she came
to the conclusion that passing around her pumped breastmilk in a jar at this
Geneva convention audience full of mostly males was the perfect teaching
example. She is quite concerned that the first habitat of the fetus, the
uterus, can be toxic to development and that breastmilk is becoming
increasingly so.

Passing a jar of my own breast milk around a table of United Nations
delegates in Geneva... that was probably one of the bolder things I've ever
done.

Steingraber will talk about her life, her work and her writing at her
keynote speech, "Protecting the First Environment: Ecological Threats to
Pregnancy, Birth and Breast Milk," on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. in the
Common. She will refer specifically to agrichemicals and to conventional
farming and gardening.

Humans are at the top of the food chain. Why would we be surprised that we
have body burdens of chemicals from what we eat? The EPA is being sued here
in Washington State over unrealistic low estimates of fish consumption.

"The one-fillet-a-month estimate is ludicrous," said Chris Wilke, Executive
Director of Puget Soundkeeper Alliance. "A large number of local sport
fishers, Native Americans, Asian Americans and others eat fish each week, if
not each day. Fish and seafood play a significant dietary role for many
Washingtonians, not to mention the cultural importance of local seafood for
many of us. The current fish consumption rate set by the state does not
reflect this and fails to protect fishing as a designated use of our
waters."

Why test breastmilk?
Testing human breastmilk is a good way to determine levels of these
contaminants in people's bodies. Unlike blood or tissue samples, breastmilk
can be collected without needles or other invasive medical procedures.
Breastmilk is also high in fat, and both PCBs and PBDEs collect in fat,
which makes it possible to run comprehensive tests with a small amount of
milk. Breastmilk, particularly from first-time mothers with very young
infants, can provide a useful picture of the exposure of the general
population.

Breastfeeding may actually reduce the health risks associated with chemical
exposures in the womb: in one study, breastfed babies exposed in utero to
PCBs did not exhibit PCB-related learning deficits, while their bottle-fed
counterparts did.

Changes in lifestyles may prevent some exposures. Recent studies of chemical
body burdens in the state of Washington have found that children who ate
organic food and who were not exposed to pesticides in their homes had
significantly lower body burdens.
