Many years ago, I was a doula for a mother who I knew slightly. When she went into labour, her husband was out of town on business, and she was scared to go through labour alone so she called and asked if I would help her (she'd heard I did doula work). I agreed. She told me that she was NOT going to breastfeed, her mind was made up. She had a fairly quick and easy labour, ended up not having any drugs, and when the baby was born the doctor laid him on her chest, skin to skin. Naturally, he soon squirmed around and latched on. I still remember how she looked at him and smiled as he nursed - she'd completely forgotten that she wasn't going to breastfeed, I think! She ended up breastfeeding that baby for nine months. There is magic in skin to skin, and I think that doctor was right not to ask. Just let it happen.
