It was the Essex, and was the model for Moby Dick. Apparently one of several whales being pursued attacked the ship, and the crew chased the whale in rowboats for several months. It was very famous, particularly because so few crew survived in part by eating their dead shipmates.

There was a ship that sailed from Nantucket to the South Pacific in the 1820's that got attacked by a whale. Some of the crew rowed to South America about 4000 miles away, and there was some cannibilism involved. Some say Melville's novel was inspired by this event.
One of the survivors was asked if he knew Starbuck, a common name for Nantucketers at the time. He replied, "know him? I et him."

Though rare in modern times, cannibalism has long been a fact of our existence. Here the Jamestown event is documented. When I read Heart of the Sea, Philbrick portrayed it as an, unstated but, accepted code amongst sea fairing sailors of the 19th century.
It's interesting when push comes to shove with respect to human behaviors. My guess it that the saying should be "All is fair in love, war, and starvation."
