Hello All,
Good for Lara Hopkins for doing her due diligence with Johnson & Johnson.
What a shame their sleep profile page was so weak. Does anyone (besides us)
ever think that all the “helpful” “information” mothers receive about sleep
is rarely helpful, rarely informed? And it all just makes more stress and
less sleep for the mother. Ugh. It’s hard to be a good mother when you are
stressed and exhausted.
The flip side is J&J is pretty innovative. text4baby probably has a lot of
really good information to offer women who might not otherwise have access,
and in a really catchy format. I have a few older products on my shelves
from J&J back in the day that I like--the Klaus video, Amazing Talents of
the Newborn, a video on the importance of touch, and this interesting
collection of papers on crying and colic.
On sleep: One time I invited a psychiatrist to come visit my nursing
mothers group. My moms wanted more info than I could give them on PPD and
they wanted to talk about their experiences and observations. This
psychiatrist was young and outgoing, a breath of fresh air in the
community, everyone was very excited about her and the moms were eager to
welcome her as our special guest.
I gave her the floor. Mistake! Somehow this (single, childless, young)
woman felt she should weigh-in as a *mental health professional* on the
hazards of co-sleeping- not the physical hazards, the mental and emotional
hazards of bringing baby into bed. You know, that awkward moment, when the
psychiatrist guest speaker at your mother’s group says, “Please, mothers,
please. Don’t sleep with your infants, because I promise you, you'll be
bringing that kid here to me in fifteen years or so hoping I can undo the
damage."
And what can you say? "Well, it's been lovely! I'm afraid that's all we
have time for!"
Best,
Kristen Panzer, MS IBCLC
