Let me say that I posted earlier on this. I assumed when you said
"Sometimes we are adding the formula to Mom's EBM and feeding every other
feed with either the fortified EBM or the formula" that you were talking
about standard infant formula. You did not give specifics on the type of
unit, population of infants, or what formula was being used. So maybe I
jumped to a conclusion.
So if you are talking about a liquid ebm fortifier being added to ebm, that
could be entirely appropriate. There is also a powdered ebm fortifier.
These products have been shown to improve growth and add calories and
minerals to low birth wt babies. I realize that if babies head circ and
growth are being monitored you must be in a level 2 or higher nicu. I am
not sure about any neuro development outcomes, however.
If a premie formula like Neosure for example is being substitued for ebm
feeds or fortified ebm feeds, when mother's milk is available, that does
not sound appropriate.
Let me also say that I am aware of the fortifier made with human milk and
I am also aware of the practice in other countries where fortifier is not
used but premies receive more volume at feeds and wt gain is good.
