Dear colleagues,

Thank you to those who responded to my previous message regarding changing the diet of an adopted 4 month old  girl from cow's-milk-with-sugar-added to human milk.

With PTP:  the mother introduced her own milk via bottle to the baby over a couple of days while babe was still in the care of the orphanage.  After two attempts, baby took a bottle of momma's milk.  A few days later baby came home to her forever family and is now on a 100% breast milk diet.  The switch was cold turkey.  Now mom is working on introducing this baby to the breast and hopes she will nurse at the breast in the near future.

I have advised her uncover her breasts when possible at home, ease into skin-to-skin contact on her own chest, bathe together, and let the baby see other babies nursing.  If there are any other suggestions, they'd be welcome.

Jennifer Cooper, RN, BSN, IBCLC

I have emailed with one of the authors of this study.

"I heard about your study on infant feeding and nut allergy on the news and read the paper this morning. I wondered if you realised how startlingly high the rates of exclusive breastfeeding to 6 months that you found were? I estimate that the children in your study were born between 2001 and 2004. Until the end of 2003 the recommended feeding practice in Australia was 4 months of exclusive breastfeeding. An ABS survey in 2001 found no infants exclusively breastfed to 6 months. Since 2003 promotion of 6 month of exclusive breastfeeding has resulted in an increase in rates to only 15% nationally."

Even after many emails back and forth he could not understand that it was impossible that they had an exclusive breastfeeding rate for 6 months of 35%.
The numbers are dodgy and the conclusions unreliable.

This would have to be the most easily rebutted paper ever, you really can't draw any conclusions from it.

Off topic, but interesting that the first thing this baby elephant does when she gets back to mom is nurse, showing again how important that breastfeeding relationship is to mammals. Breastfeeding is so much more than milk!
