Pat Young, I agree. I don't know any lactation consultant who doesn't know
about breast assessment, but I have worked with plenty of physicians who
don't. Either she had an incompetent lc (perhaps some other type of
breastfeeding helper presenting herself as an lc) OR normal appearing
breasts with no known factors indicating a medical or organic reason for
disfunction. I've faced that once or twice and it's awful!! But I would
refer on to an endocrinologist and/or present other options as may be
appropriate, not make the mom "try harder". I think the author paints lc's
with a broad brush and is not very knowledgeable about the LC's knowledge
base or scope of practice or responsibilities. It looks like she didn't
speak to any non-physician IBCLC's for the article. It also looks like she
can't decide if the lc is part of the medical community and failing or if
the lc is separate from the medical community. Have we decided that by the
way? LOL!! : )
But this story is for a pretty big outlet and maybe needs some response...
