Sonya asks for comments about the options being considered by a
breastfeeding mother whose job takes her from the US to Brazil without
her baby for nearly a week.
My first thought on reading a couple of the things on the list
(international shipping with dry ice to keep milk frozen) is that if
she has the kind of income that allows her to even imagine such a
solution, she probably has a high-power enough job to tell her
employer that she's happy to make the trip as is the baby's regular
caregiver when she is at work. A single shipment of milk would likely
cost as much as just taking the baby and whoever looks after it on a
daily basis. A week is a LONG time to be away from a child under a
year old, no matter what the child eats. If she is gone for that long
she will probably need at least a week off work on her return, just to
get her baby to trust her again. Has anyone thought of that? It needs
to be factored into the cost of having her make the trip. I assume
that if the baby gets gastroenteritis and needs to be hospitalized in
her absence, her employer will fly her home immediately?
