Dear Lactnet Friends:

The dry cleaning business I use is a lovely walk away. The business is run
by Koreans, and we have made a small friendship over the years. The
grandmother and one of the young women are both wonderful seamstresses for
those important jobs such as shortening pants that are too long.

When one young woman became pregnant, I asked about infant feeding and said
that I hope she would breastfeed. In an instant, I saw her mind's eye door
close. Oh well. I tried. She does carry her baby in a lovely Korean silk
tied backpack; they both looked so happy.

Today, we discussed the hurricane. No damage here where I live. No damage
to our friends, out in southwest Louisiana, who had hurricane parties with
booze and great food and music and games. Her family, in Mississippi was
also safe. She told me that she suggested they purchase a house that was
not in a flood zone. They spent more money than they planned to do so. For
a few years, there was no obvious benefit. But this summer was different,
and now they are happy they listened to the wise grandmother.

Grandmothers save the world!

warmly,
