Dear Lactnet Friends:
At a recent ILCA-affiliate meeting, several LCs described how their
normally protuberant nipples invert during the pinch test. I've heard of
mothers doing the test on themselves and becoming concerned about their
"inverted" nipples, when in fact they have lovely protuberant nipples.
I asked two of the most knowledgeable people I know about the Pinch Test.
Where did it come from? Where's the supporting evidence? Neither expert I
asked was able to cite any research; they both said that the Pinch Test is
one of those things that has been around forever. It is described in all
the major breastfeeding texts.
I did a search in PubMed and in Google Scholar that yielded nothing.
Does anybody have any research about the Pinch Test?
warmly,
Nikki
