It is nice to be back on LACNET after a 2 or 3 year hiatus and good to still see names I still recognize.

Please forgive me - I don't have time to search the archives ... I have been part of a health region discussion today on tongue-ties, (that will continue tomorrow) and am not up-to-date on articles speaking about tongue-ties under the following context:

1. nurses in a large B.C. health region are reporting that dentists in the area are recommending tongue-ties be clipped, (regardless of whether they interfere with breastfeed or not) to prevent dental carries. Some of the nurses are concerned that since dentists can bill for this procedure they are being done needlessly. I have never heard of this before. (In my area we have had to work hard to educate a few doctors about clipping when it is required). Have any of you heard of a tongue-tie as a cause for dental carries? Any studies?

2. the dental hygienist on the discussion thread gave lots of good advice about preventing cavities but also included that there is an increased rate of carries with demand breastfeeding when the baby falls asleep with milk in his mouth. What are the recent studies saying about this?

Many thanks,
