Dear Listmates,

We have 2 hospitals (in the Berkshires of far Western Massachusetts)
where there are non-RN IBCLCs, North Adams Regional in North Adams, and
Berkshire Medical Center, in Pittsfield.

North Adams Hospital's lactation program is very comprehensive, and the
IBCLC who provides most of the in-patient lactation care is a gifted and
dedicated LC who established a program at this hospital many years ago.

I am at Berkshire Medical Center, and although I am an RN, my position
called for an "IBCLC- RN Preferred," but was not required. I do not do any RN
duties, and actually have to get a nurse on the phone to take a doctor's
order for supplementation. We have a per diem IBCLC who is not a nurse, as
well as a Special Care Certified RN who does lactation work on my day off,
and every other weekend. It is rare that she is called out of the LC role
to give RN care.

Just wanted to let people know that non-RN IBCLCs are alive and well in
Western MA.

Mary-Jane Sackett, RN, IBCLC
Pittsfield, MA
