If the babies are given infant vitamins these are often overlooked by parents as being "food" but they are going into the gastrointestinal tract and surely can and do cause irritation?  I think there is a lot of Vitamin D being given, where in the past it was iron.  Irritating to the system, could they result in bloody stools?  I think probably.
