So many people I know are, or have been, employed by WIC and describe
conditions like Jean Cotterman does, so I know there is more to WIC
than being a huge formula customer.  It's a paradox and it's a
problem.

Does anyone have figures for how many of the IBCLCs in the US make
their living by working for WIC?  I suspect that, along with being the
biggest formula customer, they may also be the entity employing the
most IBCLCs.  That's not a statistic that gets tossed around a lot as
far as I know.  I've noticed that WIC peer counselors are
well-represented here on Lactnet and the ones who post never fail to
impress me with their commitment to women and to breastfeeding.  How
great it would be if the good forces already working in WIC could
flourish and choke out the rest!
