We don't culture the pumps either. But we (correction: I) do clean them between every user or every patient.
I use the currently acceptable cleaning wipes, but do not clean the diaphragms under the lid.
Medela says don't use wipes there; they will ruin the rubber and no fingers touch those anyway.
They say clean only with damp cloth so that's what mgmt has instr'd me to do.
But Infection Control at a different hospital requires cleaning those diaphragms and they are having them changed out with some regularity due to the rubber wearing out and splitting in the grooves.
Has anyone done cultures on breast pumps? What did you find?

Phyllis

=============
Hello Friends,
While studying for the quickly approaching exam (yikes), I came across this information in "Breastfeeding and Human Lactation", Riordan and Wambach, "The exterior of the pump should be cleaned with antiseptic solution each day and the pump cultured monthly." Our hospital uses only the Symphony (contract with Medela) and I don't think anyone has EVER cultured a pump...and housekeeping has never clean pumps on a daily basis.
Thoughts?
Thank,
