Just to stick up for myself a bit, the way I nursed, and went back to sleep, was in the laid back nursing position. I had my arms and the baby supported with pillows of various shapes and sizes, so that I could fall asleep without the baby falling in between my arms and the chair, or off my lap. If the baby even shifted position, I woke up immediately. I was only slightly reclined, not all the way back. I felt more safe that way than with the baby beside me in bed. The real message I was trying to convey, (in response to a mother who had a frequently waking baby and was not comfortable with the baby in her bed) was to encourage mothers to experiment and find a way that they can safely take care of their babies' needs, while getting some sleep, themselves.
