In the hospital I work at, we don't bath at all for 24 hours. Some folks do look askance at this but we take the tack they need to absorb any vernix, and also about using the smell of the mother to help with attachment. I haven't had anyone beg me to bath their baby before the 24 hours. Sometimes, if birth has had a bit of blood around we may wipe some off the head, but definitely no scrubbing. Interesting.
