You could experiment with other ways of encouraging mom to nurse more often.
Brainstorm with her about reasons for nursing, including selfish reasons
like wanting to top her off or get her to sleep or keep her quiet or
reconnect. Remind her that *we* gain weight on snacks and so do babies -
that if she skips that 3 minute snack she's missed an opportunity to get
significant calories in. If she keeps a number in mind, even if it's a
higher number, she may still be missing the bigger picture: that nursing is
something to indulge in often, like chocolate, not something to parcel out,
like pills.
