I have a first-time mom whose Crohn's went into remission during pregnancy
but has come back after delivery. Her baby is a week old and she is in a lot
of distress from her symptoms. She does not come from a breastfeeding family
but wants to give her baby the protection against GI issues that
breastfeeding provides. She is having bad bouts of diarrhea and is worried
about becoming dehydrated or hospitalized, and the effect that would have on
her supply and ability to breastfeed. Mother and baby are otherwise doing
well with the exception of nipple soreness. I am researching some
medications for her but I do not have a medical background and am wondering
why Crohn's goes into remission during pregnancy--is there a hormonal
component? How does breastfeeding and accompanying hormonal activity
typically affect the disease? Her potential medications (pentasa
[Mesalamine] & entrocort [Budesonide]) look fine for breastfeeding so I'm
hoping she can start taking those for her symptoms--I believe she's not on
anything right now.
