Hi everyone,

When I read about training parents in a method of baby care it makes me nervous -
even when most of the methods sound no different than techniques that've been passed down
through the generations. I question whether teaching any method is better for parents
than letting them learn by instinct and listening to their baby. Perhaps it's helpful to explain what's normal
newborn behavior (such as that shaking the head is searching for the nipple, not shaking
the head 'no'). But I keep seeing the pictures in Suzanne Colson's reasearch paper, where
the mother who was placed skin-to-skin did better with breastfeeding than the woman who
who was taught how to do it. We insert 'expert' advice between parents and their
instincts, and I think we need to be very careful when we do that.
