Jessica,
I have worked both in MTF (WAMC) and in the private sector. Our policies are not very different. ABM has a great sample hospital policy that you can tailor to your facility (www.bfmed.org). Most MTF's use Fort Irwin's policy and tailor it to their facility. I use HBANA's milk storage guidelines from their publication. We teach mom's that our storage is more regimented due to it being a hospital but use Medela's and Ameda's handouts for patient teaching (free). We have no delay in breastfeeding due to anesthesia general or epidural (check out Hale's book) (Same for private and WAMC). We delay most basic nursing care until after the first hour of birth. We may do basic vital signs on mom's belly. (Policies on S2S can be found on Newman's website (www.drjacknewman.com) We attended a seminar from Dr. Morrison and implemented her recommendations. Currently her staff teaching and parent teachning video is available on youtube. Search kangaroo care on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwJOaz87pxg). We do mandatory 4 hour inservices for our staff concerning policy, issues, techniques and current modalities every year (IBCLC developed seminar that targets our weak areas that we have identified in our rounds and chart audits). We encourage all nurses to attend seminars in the area or ILCA and advertise this to our staff. We also do a lot of one on one teaching as problem arises. We do CBL modules quarterly too. I hope this helps.
Kelly
