Dear Friends:

Thanks for the information about reimbursement for Depo; depending on the
woman's coverage, the shot might only be covered if she gets it before
hospital discharge.

ACOG is favor of giving the shot at 72 hours, according to some lousy
research that compared breastfeeding rates between 2 groups of women (with
mothers in both groups doing partial breastfeeding)........amazing that
there was no difference between the group gettting Depo and the group that
didn't!! (barf!)

The paternalistic attitude is not limited to physicians. I have heard female
health workers saying "You don't want her to get pregnant again, do you?" as
if I was the one making her pregnant. This is a violation of integrity.

Another disturbing factor in this situation is that the only birth control
methods being pushed on women are the hormonal ones. Hormonal methods do
nothing to protect from sexually transmitted disease. There are many other
forms of birth control.

I've had some success at getting the attention of a new young mother (such
as the 17 year old with her 4th baby) by asking, "Are you planning to
have 12 kids by the time you are 25? That's the way you are headed now
unless something changes." Their look of horror and alarm indicates to me
that she has been stopped in her tracks and is thinking.

What ever happened to education and practical advice? I am in favor of
teaching elementary school children as I taught my own daughters. From the
time they were old enough to wonder where babies came from, I told them that
there were 2 things one did to make a baby. One was to have sex and the
other was to stop using birth control.

Young pregnancy is a huge problem in the States, where many consider it to
be giving permission for sexual activity by educating school children about
sex, disease and pregnancy. We have more problem with teen pregnancy in the
States than in any other developed nation. Of course it's fine to use sex
(and breasts) to sell beer and toothpaste and cars, and to feature sexual
activity in mainstream TV......but to give children the truth (about
breastfeeding or sex) is considered "immoral" or "condoning."

It is easy in the factory model to just inject everybody................that
might work for chickens and cows, but doesn't for humans.

Maybe we need to be asking providers the question "What does she do after
the first shot of depo wears off and she can't afford another?"

warmly,
Nikki Lee
