Does
anyone have a suggestion of a good alternative medication without the side
effects for the infant? I could not find information on Lactmed about the
half-live of the medication. Should the mother pump and dump initially?
Any other suggestions?

Many thanks in advance for your wisdom, as I am a Lactation Consultant
"newbie" (just heard yesterday that I passed the exam).

~! First off, congratulations to you, Sharon, and to everyone, including my
LLL CoLeaders, Anne and Audrey, who also passed!
Back pain, I know from personal experience can be both debilitating and
depressing. Although I never suffered from it when I had an infant, it did
cripple me at times, once for months. The only thing that really helped me
get it under control, was working with a series of physical therapists,
finally getting to one who knew Muscle Energy techniques that would help the
muscles to stop spasming and relax, and who taught me and my husband how we
could do them at home when I feel my back vulnerable. Not all PTs are trained
in these techniques and standard PT did not help me, nor did chiropractic
after the first time, before it got really awful. This doesn't help with
the medication question, and sometimes the pain is just so bad one wants to
die, so it can be helpful, but hopefully in the long run, this mom could
find help from someone who can help her manage her muscles over the long haul.
Of course if it's not muscle, but disk or something, this may not be
workable. Just thought I would mention the option, though.

Peace,
Judy
