**Hello Christine,

I used to try to hold off on suggesting a pump, but have found that it can
be better to start pumping sooner rather than later--get to it before mom
becomes too overwhelmed and quits breastfeeding altogether.

**Although this may be true in some situations, I want to share a beautiful
story with all of you. Last Saturday, we had a training day, followed by a
difficult meeting about the WHO-code. After that, I was really tired and was
so happy to sit down in a Greek restaurant with fourteen colleagues and have
a nice dinner before returning home (two hour drive) to a family who is not
involved as my colleagues.
By the time I got home, it was about 11.30 pm and I dozed off on the couch.
Sunday morning I took my time, slept in, stayed in bed with my husband, had
an easy breakfast and warm shower. All that time, I had not been watching
the cell phone for my practice. Ever since Saturday afternoon, I had not
checked it. By the time I did that, somewhere around 2.00 pm on Sunday, I
noticed I had six missed calls! I dialled the number, got a mom on the phone
and said I felt sorry not having seen the message earlier. I asked her what
her reason for calling me was. She said she had been looking for a pump. I
asked whether she had found one in the meantime and she hadn't. "But that's
no problem", she said; "we kept trying all day and night and my baby is at
the breast now, drinking well!"

What a great story! What a wonderful illustration of how important it is to
keep mom and baby together, to allow them time and give them ample
opportunity to get the hang of the process.
This will not always work out so nicely, but I think it could work like this
more often than it does and interfering with all kinds of accessories can
definitely play a complicating role in the relationship.

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands
