Hi Cheryl,

I also work in a hospital where we have about 100 deliveries per month.
We also see every mom every day, however we don't do as much standard
teaching as it sounds like you do. We do have a breastfeeding folder
which provides written information on many of the topics you mention.
We encourage parents to look through it when they can. We also have the
newborn channel w/ breastfeeding programming which is encouraged. Our
goal is to do an initial assessment of breasts/nipples/pertinent medical
hx/meds, and what the patient's goal is for breastfeeding, and to teach
hand expression. That is done w/ our first visit. After that, we try to
see one feeding per day, particularly for a 1st time mom. Multips we
are more flexible with. And we do see any patient that is having
problems. Some have advised that we take on more of a consult role and
only see problem situations, but I disagree for two reasons. 1) We
often will catch a problem early on by seeing each patient every day,
and we can avoid further difficulties 2) I feel it is very important
for us all to see normal breastfeeding every day...that makes abnormal
jump out at us. Besides, I think I need good regular doses of normal
each day...it keeps me positive. One thing I would caution you
on...don't take on any more! You are doing an amazing amount of work
and I think if you take on any more you will be facing burn-out. Best
Wishes as you move forward.
