<<A common belief in some communities here is
that if a baby burps on the breast, the milk in that breast will be bad.
Some cases of mastitis are related to this conviction.>>

Today I got the e-mail that just ends it all for me. A dear young "niece"
(niece because her mother lived with our family for many years and was
actually an older sister to my siblings and me) wrote to me in distress about
her third baby (who was born at home without intervention). So, baby J
seems as though (according to the e-mail) she is getting too much milk -- lots
of gas and crying. Her mother told her -- get ready for this -- to give
her a small amount of rice cereal because -- ta da -- it would absorb the gas
in the baby's system. AND -- oh my word -- this is the worst part --
that MY MOTHER told my "sister" that.

Sigh. Mother would have given cereal in the WOMB if she could have gotten
it there. But the "telephone game" morphed "sleeping" into "absorbing
gas."

It is going to take YEARS to get rid of some of the myths with which we
are inundated (please take note of the careful use of the English language in
which I have NOT ended the sentence with either a prep - or a prop-
osition.)
