An incidental story, after the "formula intolerance" thoughts..

Ran into a friend the other night. His child suddenly got very, very sick,
couldn't keep food down, bowel movements becoming fewer and further between.
She was about 16 months old. Ran testing of all sorts, she was admitted to
the hospital, sick, sick, sick. Went from 23 pounds to about 16. Finally
figured out she has celiac disease. She's now on a no gluten diet, and doing
much better.

The whole time the dad was telling me this story, I was getting chills. If
this baby had been formula fed, imagine how dreadful this whole situation
could have turned out. She was weaned at 13 months, got really sick by 16
months, and it took over 2 months to diagnose the problem. She lost, what,
30% of her body weight? (too early for math)

As the dad told me this story, I was horrified. I was with them when this
beautiful baby was born, assisted with breastfeeding issues, and have been
there for a good part of her life). But, the whole time, my skin just
tingled as I knew how what they had persisted in doing (breastfeeding did
not come easily) had saved her life.

She probably would have been diagnosed with formula intolerance, doctors
were trying to blame GERD on her vomiting, and they would have changed
formulas a million times. Instead, she remained healthy until she weaned,
and because she had developed a decent GI system, it took another 3 months
to get really sick.

Amazing.

Best wishes,

Sam Doak
