I work in a hospital with about 350 births a month. There is a lot of
challenges with outdated policies and lack of skin to skin on a regular
basis. The latest challenge is several Pediatricians are telling Moms
and recommending to our manager that the discharge instructions include
that babies should have 6-8 voids and stools a day, starting on day one.
We have told our manager that most of the references for discharge
instructions recommend one stool and void per day of life, although I
have not found a study that states that. (I know, the Pediatricians
probably don't have a study that supports their statement either, but in
our facility they don't need to have one, they just need an MD behind
their recommendation). Any one have any ammunition to help the Lactation
Consultants? I am afraid that this new recommendation will bring on a
rash of supplementing which is already overdone as we have a policy that
states a baby needs supplementing if they have not nursed in 5-6 hours
(no matter what their blood sugar).
