Hi,

I have a mother who visited me today - she is pregnant and due with her 3rd
child in 4 weeks. When she was 2 months pregnant, she was diagnosed with a
huge cyst which turned into an abcess on her nipple. It was the size of a
nickle in diameter, and was drained, removed and packed. Mother was treated
with antibiotics.

She is now due in 4 weeks, and the cyst has slowly grown back. It is currently
a little over the size of a dime. It's the largest cyst I have ever seen! It is
unbelievably NOT painful.

This mother has seen two physicians. The physician who had the first cyst
removed says to excise it again now, before the baby comes. The hope is that
the wound will have healed and mother will be able to attempt breastfeeding.
The second physician says to wait until after baby's birth, because the risk of
infection from the surgery is too great.

What to do?? Any advice will be appreciated - I can't imagine how mom's baby
be will be able to nurse on this breast if the cyst is not removed beforehand.
I've never seen anything like this in 13 years!

Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
