Wow that is a tough situation any way you look at it! Do the moms travel
with the work or do they live very near the fields? If they live near, could
someone bring baby to them to nurse? If not then I have a couple ideas, just
brainstorming here:
First, they truly need anticipatory guidance re what to do during their
maternity leave time, if any. in other words, getting bf going very well,
and stockpiling ebm for when they return to work.
Then I would ask if they could have some sort of tent or lean-to sent up (or
do they have a shaded place to take a break) designated for expressing. Of
course they have the option of hand expressing, manual pumping, pedal
pumping, battery).
They would need a place to store the milk that is iced, I'm guessing they
bring lunch and cool fluids, so they need an ice chest or frozen blue ice to
store the milk. They would need a way to clean their hands, I am guessing
they wear gloves, if not that would be an idea if they can work with gloves
on. Maybe even a box of latex or nitrile gloves like hospitals use, so they
can remove and wash (a small container of soapy water even (not sure what
amenities are at their disposal) or sanitizer wipes, and a bottle of hand
sanitizer. They could even do the wash, sanitizing, and then put the medical
gloves on to express.
If there is an affordable way to hands-free pump, they can do this while
eating lunch. Perhaps if that is a common occupation in your region, there
would be a way for WIC to provide a hands-free option for those moms.
I hope some of these ideas are helpful.
