One thing I didn't mention earlier but that I definitely tell my students now is that the baby is a LOT more likely to contract something nasty from the hospital staff than the staff is of contracting something nasty from the newborn and its mother.

That is exactly what I tell my patients, that I am wearing gloves, not to protect myself, but to protect them and their newborn. I do a lot of hand washing in front of the parents and talk about how important it is when I am teaching classes. I even had a dad once tell the OB not to touch his wife because she came into the room for the delivery and hadn't washed her hands.
