You make a good point Nikki, there certainly are health care providers as
well as parents who will choose to not believe the research. I find the
health care providers far more frustrating because they are the one's that
the parents turn to, and the ones that the parents believe. I do include
"us" in the term "health care providers". The field of human lactation is
changing rapidly, and of course we all have a responsibility to stay up to
date.

I'm back at University part time at the moment, and I'm currently working on
a paper for my breastfeeding class. I've been pouring over journal articles
(one of the big benefits to being a student again is having access to all
the journals!), and that is what has brought all of this to mind at the
moment. The research on why women stop breastfeeding, (why they don't start,
why they have problems etc), is out there, but for some reason it doesn't
seem to be reaching the health care providers. Although, as Nikki points
out, perhaps it is reaching them, and they simply choose not to believe it.

Warmly,
Fleur Bickford BSc., RN, LLLL
