These directions are at the bottom of every post in LactNet:

1. To temporarily stop your subscription write in the body of an email: set lactnet nomail
2. To start it again: set lactnet mail
3. To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet
4. To get a comprehensive list of rules and directions: get lactnet welcome

It appears you are using the wrong phrase. It specifically says to use "set lactnet nomail". If you use these directions, it should work. I set myself nomail and reset back to receiving mail again when I went home for a month last summer.
