Norma, a comment on what has become an issue here-abouts.
There was a very wise breastfeeding nurse who practised many years ago in a
community that still believed that colostrum was of little value. To
discourage mothers from discarding it, or giving formula until the "real
milk" came in, she had the idea to use a teaspoon to illustrate the value of
colostrum. She would say that 1 teaspoon of colostrum was equal to 5
teaspoons of mature milk, that is, it was highly concentrated.
We thought this was a great idea when we put together a training program
many years ago - and thus the message spread! In updating the program in
2001, we realised that this was not an accurate statement when comparing the
constituents of colostrum and mature milk, and thus removed it from the
program. Alas, we are still hearing this information being shared across
the country........
I feel the focus needs to be on a well-latched baby going to the breast
frequently and effectively - the colostrum-to-milk process will happen as it
needs to, without us needing to pinpoint any special change/time.
