Thanks, Nancy, for that link to the Nurturing site and the .pdf. Wonderful stuff that I will put to good use. But here's the inevitable exception questions:

1. In a hospital bed, all moms are reclining and baby-led latching seems to work well. Then mom relaxes and closes her eyes and the OB RN comes in and says,"You can't sleep with your baby like that. It's dangerous!" That's followed by the oft-repeated story of the baby who fell off mom's body onto the floor. It was a large mother. The mother I was just working with was NOT a large mother. No matter to the OB RN.

2. Do you find a great number of mothers with very large post-delivery tummies and breasts that point "south" on both sides, with nipples / areolas that are conical, either soft and marshmallowy or firm and non-protractile? Essentially, they are flat nipples, or huge and very disproportionate to babe's mouth.

When placing babe frontally on that mom, babe wraps around her belly and still has his head cocked hard over his own shoulder to get to the nipple. From either below the breasts to crawl "up", or above the breasts to crawl "down", baby-led latching never seems to work for these moms.
The only position I have found that works is the "football" or "clutch" hold.

Any good suggestions?

Phyllis
