Hi All,

 

Neither baby I am working with started solids early - baby 1 born at full
term started solids around 7 months.  Baby 2 born at 34 wks started solids
around 9 months - but really isn't interested even now at 10 months.  So I
am not seeing that iron fortified foods are the issue with either child.

 

I am interested in the possibility that an anemic mom can have lower iron in
her milk and that taking supplements can thereby increase the iron levels in
her milk.  However it is also confusing and I'd like to see if I can clarify
something.  Is it that if mom is anemic and the milk ends up lacking iron,
that when mom takes the supplements it simply puts the mom and the milk back
to a normal level?  And, if mom is not anemic taking more iron supplements
will NOT increase the amount of iron in the milk - her body will simply pass
it out of her system?  In either case this does nothing for the baby ( I am
assuming) unless baby is under 6 months of age in which case baby would now
be getting the normal amount s/he should be getting and if baby is over 6
months of age it doesn't matter because s/he is now needing supplemental
iron rich foods because s/he has now used up that stores s/he was born with.
