Dear Friends,
I need help, please, for a mom whose baby decided to stop latching to the
breast suddenly at 10 days old. Baby opens mouth wide, roots, but won't
latch, just cries etc.; except accidently once for "dessert " (was painful for
mom) .. as mom reached across him on her lap last night after a string of
finger feedings of expressed milk. Yesterday they went for a chiropractic
treatment for both mom and baby. Now it's 48 hours since this started. She
has tried many tricks from archives, Newman, Answer Book, etc.: bath
together, S2S, self latch, sleeping together, rocking, walking, side lying, being
calm. Unmedicated birth with optimal S2S, no separation, etc. He had a painful
latch x 1 week, then was assisted with deeper latching at 7 days old (Glover
technique). Changed to self latching immediately at signs of refusal. No
change in environment, soap, diet, etc. Looked like the usual recovery from
birth, then something new. Refusal behavior looks like nipple preference, even
though the baby has been only at-the-breast fed. Started finger feeding with
syringe in response to refusal. Pumping and baby's intake and output okay.
Baby will cuddle, no arching. I have run out of ideas.
Thank you all very much, Judy
